NEW MODEL ARMY "SPRING OFFENSIVE TOUR" North Ormesby 1983
30th April 1983: An unknown Bradford band called NEW MODEL ARMY came to The Pavilion Community Centre in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough as part of their "SPRING OFFENSIVE TOUR" of smalltown England shortly before the release of their debut single. About 50 people attended and applauded but it proved a bittersweet night... There was tension you betcha! It was to be the last gig at the old converted Pavilion cinema as local residents in the nearby streets complained to the council of the noise !!! (Poison Girls & Rubella Ballet had played in months prior too) ...But it didn't dampen our spirits as we walked 5 miles home believing in vengeance and with great expectations for the future... There was probably stormclouds too or maybe Eston hills on the far horizon.......

    I saw Crass at the Mayflower in Manchester. Must have been 1981 or 1982 (I was 13 or 14) and I wrote to them a couple of times. They always replied with a personal letter and a few posters that took pride of place on my bedroom wall for years. Their grass roots approach made them unique and I hope they are all well and enjoying life.

    I saw crass at the 100 club at a 'punk unity' gig, they were unannounced and the other band was The Exploited, before crass Annie Anxiety came on and did some feminist poetry which freaked out and shut up the seig heiling bone heads in the audience which was fun to watch, it's not a gig that anyone in any of the bands likes to talk about. Apart from the experience of seeing crass and exploited together it wasn't fun.

    Recently my interest in Crass has been re-awakened. Mainly because of the current situation in the world. Not only the current state of things in the Ukraïne and Gaza, but since the invasion of Iraq and on. In the early 80's I was really into Crass, but I always resented their opinion on the Clash. Penny says it well, when he mentions Joe Strummer getting out of his Mercedes. Because on one side Crass tried to be non-judgemental, but on the other side they really were. I couldn't care less if the Clash was 100% correct, neither did I care if Crass was. Nobody's perfect. But I have always hated this backstabbing. Crass didn't realize enough, I think, how many punks back then, blindly followed everything they said. Including myself. And honestly, I still agree with most of the lyrics. The bands that made me interested in punk were the Clash and the Jam, when someone gave me a cassette with their first albums in the summer of 1977. I was 13 then, and it changed my life. If I didn't get this tape, I probably would have never found out about Crass some time later. Still I think Penny talks a bit like he's on top of it all. Like saying musically he didn't like rock 'n' roll or even punk, and he likes jazz and modern classical music. Hell yeah, I love Debussy, Grieg, Strauss (Richard), and the likes. Especially fond of the predecessor Beethoven. I am not too fond of Jazz, though, still I do like Reinhardt and Davis. To bring back the Strummer comparison: Richard Strauss was poor, but thanks to his music he also became quite wealthy. Shame on him. But really, I admire Crass for all their good ideas about a peaceful world, and that's what matters most to me. Therefore I dusted of their records and listen to them regularly. And guess what, at the age of 59 I still consider myself a punk.

    it's not a tent.. more like bivvy tent. Too small too low not comfortable at all. The entrance is horrible narrow. Big man should find much bigger tent. At this weight 1.5 kg, you could find 2 person tent, for half price at chinese websites.

    • @pancrack
      @pancrack 11 місяців тому

      To be fair i say it is a bivvy tent and it is sold as a bivvy tent. For big men - width ways how big? Its not narrow and at 7'10 certainly not short. I have a 2 man tent at only 100g lighter but prefer this for solo camps as it is so great for stealth and fitting in small spaces.

    • @Devonshire-Bey
      @Devonshire-Bey 5 місяців тому

      Of course it`s a tent, it is a bivvy style tent! Bivvies don`t have both inners and outers, and very rarely do they have a pole at each end (If the have a hooped pole at all), and although Pan Crack didn`t mention or show it, the door actually opens wider than you think, as the zip extends to over half way across the width of the end of "the tent," so the door is sort of L-shaped. Admittedly it`s low, but that makes it brilliant in strong winds, it`s an excellent little tent, that`s even better when used in conjunction with a small tarp to give it a bit of a porch area for cooking Etc. I`m 6.1, and I was very comfortable sleeping in it with a whole lot of gear, and it could put up with much more severe weather than some cr@ppy taller tent from China.

    I really dont know why they didn't make the overlay sheet just slightly bigger so it stops the draft around the edges, other than that its a great tent

    • @pancrack
      @pancrack 11 місяців тому

      I hear what you are saying and I too have thought that but i think it is to minimise condensation which bivvies/bivvy tents can suffer from. There are no vents otherwise. As i said in the vid, i questioned it being suitable for winter because of the airyness. I have never tried in snow yet but been meaning too. Maybe this winter. 6 years on since i bought this, i do think there are ways that it could be improved on, maybe cutting down the number of stakes it requires - longer cord at the corners on the inner so that both the inner and outer corners and held by single stakes? Maybe it would have to have a longer stake but still surely a weight saving? Maybe also clips or shorter sleeves on the inner to connect to the poles instead of the sleeves as they are. And maybe a zip that extends further along one side to improve access in and out. I recently got an Durston Xmid 2P Solid which is huge and weighs about the same, as i dont use trekking poles, but in the UK for low profile, dark green stealth, performance in wind and the smaller footprint I still choose this for solo (plus dog) trips.

    This person is a hippy genius. He clearly did too much LSD. Crass ruined society and everything interesting about music until they decided to go Alternative. Look, they made it clear. Punk is Dead. Check out Prosthetic Church if you have any brains left after listening to Crass peeps. They were pretty much total hypocrites who set too high of a standard for them to live by as Anarchist hippy punks, proof that PUNK is a fascist related band of intellectual POSEURS trying to make themselves appear liberating as a movement when really they had no clue that they wrecked society and people's careers and ambitions in life. Update: Sorry, I was just in a bad mood yesterday. I don't really mind Crass's Alternative. It was just a joke for me to think I was ever "punk." It really was my mental illness. Note: I think Crass were just cashing in off whatever was trendy at the time in politics and taking it to the extreme, but yes, there's alot of fighting about race, sex, politics, species, and religion now because their ridiculously stubborn Anarchist politics. I'm glad Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher succeeded, but I definitely don't think they're very nice people, there's still alot of chauvinism and sexism in PUNK about politics and activism, which is why I moved on to Alternative. I'm sure they aren't too bad, but yes, I agree, they got too serious about PUNK. I've never been too serious about PUNK, I've always been considered too Alternative to fit into the politics of PUNK. I mean, I'm very open minded, for a Jewish and Nazi truce, and ending racial and political conflict. Sure, Crass had good intentions when they went Alternative, but there was alot of negativity that came out of PUNK also and why Steve and his new band is focusing on it truly baffles me. Let PUNK die. It's over. It's too mainstream, narcissist, POSEUR, mentally ill, and just filled with hate. It ruined society. Face it.

      Don't get me wrong, Crass helped liberate music, but they also were just a terrorizing, noisey, weird band that had alot of pent up hate because that's what PUNK was about at the time. I've never been for hate and judging anyone. They thought they were "punks" but they really were just a bunch of hippies and Anarchists trying to cash in off of Punk's fame and fortune and they actually did. That's the only reason they seem like a fascist joke to me now. Enough said. They had some nice stuff, but it was pretty hateful stuff and based on what PUNK was, slightly. Face it, PUNK is racist and fascist music as a bad, mentally ill, joke, or it just isn't PUNK.
